Pelvic Health

What is Pelvic Health?

The role of your pelvic floor muscles is to provide active support to your pelvic organs, (bladder and rectum) and contribute to sexual function. These muscles and soft tissue structures can become weakened over time. This can create difficulty with bowel & bladder habits as well as sexual function. Lumbar spine, diaphragm, and abdominal muscles work closely together with pelvic floor to allow for normal movement.

A trained physical therapist understands the role of these muscle functions, and their relationship with movement to prevent dysfunction or injury. Incontinence, pelvic pain, coccyx pain, constipation, post-partum, antepartum, and post-prostatectomy are a few diagnoses that a pelvic floor physical therapist assist in treating. A thorough exam of strength, flexibility, and coordination is performed to provide an individualized program. Pelvic floor physical therapy is for a variety of patient populations including pediatrics, geriatrics, women, and men.

What To Expect On Your First Visit:

A thorough evaluation is performed in a private room with a trained physical therapist. Examination of lumbar spine, pelvis, and hip may be warranted based on patient’s symptoms. If appropriate, a pelvic floor exam is performed to gain information, and begin treatment within the first visit. Education on possible posture modification, general diet modification, (that directly affects symptoms) and exercise programs could be discussed based on patient presentation.
